The northwestern province is named after the large umbrella-like trees prevalent in the zone. It encompasses a vast area of diverse topography, from the boiling mud pots of Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, to the sun-drenched beaches of the Pacific coast.
With the opening of the Liberia airport in this region in 2003, the number of visitors has skyrocketed and this is the most popular part of Costa Rica for tourist visitors. Real Estate has gone up significantly in value but there are still a number of excellent properties available for investment and life-style ownership.
